Maria Montes is a print designer and a calligraphic aficionada. Originally from Catalonia, she moved to Australia in 2006 to pursue a career in graphic design. Maria learned calligraphy for the first time in 1996. After a long break working as a full time designer, she went back to study calligraphy, typography and typeface design in Barcelona and New York City.
In 2011 Maria co-founded a Melbourne based design studio called MarchTwentyTwo, a collaborative project focused on limited edition scarves, art prints and handmade crochet baskets. Nowadays, Maria splits her time between Melbourne and Barcelona working on textile prints, graphic design, illustration, lettering and calligraphic personal development.
Those of you who have read volume 03 of TypographJournal would have stumbled across Maria Montes beautiful penmanship in the freshbet feature. I am a fan of Maria's and get excited each time I see her work pop up in my instagram feed (as am always confidant it will be a delight!)
Maria’s work is both delicate and bold, typography, colour and pattern all play staring roles. Calligraphy is the basis for much of her work. Writing letters and honoring the tool with calligraphic form teaches Maria how to look at letterforms and understand the rhythm weighting and contrast of each character but also aids in the masterful pen control that is evident in her intricate illustrative works.
It is a really busy month for maria as next weekend we are fortunate enough to have Maria visit Brisbane and host a Copperplate Calligraphy masterclass in collaboration with workshop to be hosted at the Autumn Co - I am really looking forward to the opportunity to meet maria while she is here! And in two weeks time her first solo show 'Breaking the Ice' launches in Melbourne!
Breaking The Ice Embraces both aspects of this idiom – making a start, and the art of mixing drinks – this exhibition brings the excitement of new beginnings with a salute to tradition, in both cocktails and art. Combining patterns, lettering and illustration, this body of work is an explosion of colour and intricate detail, celebrating the finer things in life. Cheers!
