Do you have any rituals and routines around showing up to the page?
I live and die by my calendar—routine plays an important part in my life (and well-being). I have OCD and without some rituals I end up upside down and back-to-front. Also, I don’t have any natural drawing ability, so I have to work hard at my practice! So yes absolutely I schedule the time to draw. I have a ‘deliberate practice’ session built into my office hours one day a week (usually about two hours) of sketching.
I pick a particular genre of type—or something specific I want to get better at and draw that to death to try and learn/advance/improve.
The more I learn, the more I feel like a student. I am 16 years into my career, and my taste far outweighs my ability when it comes to drawing and writing—so I have a lot to learn and a lot of room to improve in both areas. I have noticed—when I am preparing for a workshop and drawing more—my skills improve, and as soon as I become less regular my ability takes a nosedive! The same can be said for my writing, frequency is important to keep your creative fitness up.
