These brilliant workshops are an investment in yourself, your skills and your creative confidence. In these hands-on classes you'll learn; The historical context of each calligraphic style and the fundamental elements of constructing a letter: the stroke geometry, pressure and sequence.
Who should attend?
These workshops are for students who want to learn the fundamentals of calligraphy through historical context and practice. No prior calligraphy experience is required for this course. These are great workshops for beginners and seasoned calligraphers who are looking to refine their skills. Graphic designers with an interest in typography will take the most out of this course!
What can people expect to learn over the series?
You will learn the difference between calligraphy, lettering and typography. You will learn that calligraphy directly reflects the movement of the hand. Practising calligraphy is connecting your brain with your hand and your eye. It is also about having fun and learning by doing!
Which tools will participants learn to master?
You will learn how to use traditional calligraphy tools: broad nibs, bamboo pens and pointed flexible nibs. You will also experiment with modern tools such as Pilot parallel pens and Pentel Touch brushes. You’ll learn how to build ink reservoirs for bamboo and ruling pens.
What kind of environment is Rotson studios?
Rotson Studios is a creative co-working space in the heart of Fitzroy (Melbourne). The studio is located on level 2 of the iconic Moran & Cato building and features high metal pressed ceilings, great natural light, fantastic view of the city and timber floors. It is currently housing 17 freelance designers, photographers and videographers. The studio is just off Brunswick street (behind Naked for Satan), close to restaurants, cafés, trams and supermarkets.
The workshops run from 10am to 2.30pm hosting a maximum of 12 students. Each session includes snacks, tea, coffee and a selection of tapas for lunch. Individual workshops are $90 each
