Dafi Kühne released this inspirational (& informative!) video documenting the production of his latest poster. Whereby he paints lettering forms with a stiff bristle brush in PVA glue to create a relief before mounting the dried sheet as a plate at type high to print gorgeous fluid and highly textural forms. (Mind blown once again - I am a huge fan of Dafi’s work and brave approach to experimentation with print media).
Paul shaw’s newsletter this month previewed a book on the history of the Tipoteca. Designed by Simon Esterson, the designer of Eye magazine, printed and produced [metallic inks, short sheets, letterpress inserts, gatefolds and more] by Grafiche Antiga, run by the Antiga family that created the Tipoteca. There are contributions by James Clough, James Mosley, Jim and Bill Moran of the Hamilton Wood Type Museum, Alan Kitching, Erik Spiekermann, Leonardo Sonnoli, Enrico Tallone and others.
Amy Constable of St Gertrudes press has just launched the inaugural Australian Literary Diary, just in time for Christmas. In collaboration with Caroline Kennon, Amy has created the diary she always needed. With all the book festivals and literary events, competitions and submissions in one place and monthly reading recommendations of great Australian stories. Produced with a letterpress cover, lettered by Eliza Svikulis.

Using very different kinds of instruments, from a MacBook to a pantograph, he pushes the boundaries of design and print. Fusing modern means with the century-old tradition of the letterpress, he forms a new vocabulary on how to communicate through type and form in a truly un-nostalgic way.
My family is from the north east of England, I lived and workedthere in my late teens so it holds a special place in my heart. These Northern Types, is ambitious, expansive, and inventive. It consists of 17 small publications, each of which explores a different aspect of what northern identity is, and can be, in the 21st century, and each of which reflects a custom typeface produced for the project.

Ten years ago, Lynette Shum at the National Library received a call from the Wai Shing market garden in Pukekohe. Their shed was falling down, and inside that shed was a metric tonne of metal letters and characters, overflowing from wooden printing trays. It turned out to be New Zealand’s only surviving set of printing type in the Chinese language, once used to print the New Zealand Chinese Growers’ Monthly Journal (僑農月刊, published 1949-72).
The Engravist Workshop and Exhibition focuses on the theme of Cultural Heritage, two workshops will be held in ”gravure and colography“ techniques. The exhibition will include works from the workshop as well as art from the wider print community. Engravist is currently calling for submissions of prints 50 x 35 cm, the deadline is 16 November 2018 and entry is free. (Submission form - in English - can be downloaded here)
